The North Carolina CDL knowledge test is administered by the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV). You must schedule and take your knowledge test at an authorized testing location before receiving your Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP).

Before you can take the knowledge test, you need to meet these North Carolina CDL eligibility requirements set by the NC Division of Motor Vehicles and federal regulations.

  • 18 years old — intrastate CDL (within North Carolina only)

Since February 7, 2022, all first-time CDL applicants must complete ELDT (Entry-Level Driver Training) from an FMCSA-registered training provider before taking their CDL skills test.
