Brake Fade

Brake fade occurs when brakes overheat from repeated or prolonged use — typically on long downgrades. Hot brakes lose friction and stopping power. To prevent brake fade on downgrades, use engine braking (lower gears) rather than riding the brakes.

Brake Lag

Air brakes don't apply instantly. There's a 0.4-second delay between pressing the pedal and the brakes fully engaging. At highway speeds, this adds significant stopping distance compared to hydraulic brakes.

Total Stopping Distance

For air brake vehicles, total stopping distance = Perception Distance + Reaction Distance + Brake Lag Distance + Effective Braking Distance. At 55 mph, this can exceed 400 feet — nearly 1.5 football fields.

Dual Air Brake Systems

Most modern CDL vehicles have dual air brake systems (primary and secondary circuits). If one fails, the other provides enough braking to stop. If low pressure warning activates, drivers must stop immediately and safely — do not continue driving.
